M aria Castelli joined Vintage ’59 in September 2021 after serving as Manager and Wine Buyer at Vintage Berkeley, but you might say the seed was already planted when she joined the Vintage ’59 team on a wine trip in 2019.
After graduating from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Italian Studies and Art History, Maria began her career in university administration in Rome and later at UC Berkeley, but she soon realized that her passions lay elsewhere. Having grown up immersed in a culture of food and wine, the wine industry was a natural fit. Originally from Lake Como in Northern Italy, her family moved to Sonoma County when Maria was six and began growing Nebbiolo in the Green Valley AVA in 1997. In addition to the viticulture and production experience she has gained through her family’s winery, Maria completed an Intensive Sommelier Training at the International Culinary Center and passed her CMS Certified exam in June 2018.
Maria is fluent in Italian and has traveled extensively throughout Europe. When she’s not slinging bottles, Maria enjoys hiking with her lab Penny, camping with friends, doing yoga and dabbling in a variety of creative projects.
